Another round of technology classes will be offered by the library in April, but will take place at the Mariposa Senior Center. Having trouble navigating your cell phone? Did you purchase a new one and want to get more familiar with it? This class is geared toward helping seniors use their phones. This free, three-week program will be held April 9, April 23, and April 30 at the Senior Center, at 1 p.m. each time. Materials and equipment are provided. Space is limited. You're invited to the Mariposa Wildfire Preparedness Fair on Saturday, May 10, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on the Mariposa County Courthouse lawn! This free, family-friendly event brings together multiple local, state, and federal agencies to share actionable strategies that can help protect homes and communities before fire strikes. BONUS! Complimentary hot dogs, veggie dogs, chips, and bottled water will be served throughout the afternoon, weather permitting and while supplies last. Attendees can: - Find out about FREE and grant-supported programs that help you prepare your property to reduce wildfire risk - Talk with experts about fuels reduction methods such as brush clearing and shaded fuel breaks - Explore home hardening techniques like ember-resistant vents and fire-rated roofing - Get tips on evacuation planning, including go-bag essentials and safe route mapping This event is hosted by Mariposa County and the University of California Cooperative Extension, with participation from a wide range of partners including the American Red Cross, USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, Central California Animal Disaster Team, Mariposa Safe Families, the Mariposa Fire Safe Council, the Mariposa Resource Conservation District, CAL FIRE MMU, the Mariposa Fire Department and Firewise Communities, and Happy Goat. Mariposa sports fans! Consider coming to this library event in May. It'll be Saturday, May 10 at 5 p.m. Former MCHS Athletic Director Trace DeSandres will take a look back at the greatest football teams in MCHS history. Ballots will be cast at this event, and at the end of the night we will crown the "GOAT" of the Mariposa football program. All are welcome. This is free to attend. No registration required.

The library will be hosting a Literacy Open House event on Wednesday, April 30. At this event, guests can learn about the library's literacy grant funding and how it is used to benefit the community. The library has tutors trained and ready to help with people's literacy needs. This is an opportunity to learn how to get involved. The volunteers and workers who help with this program, as well as other library volunteers will be on hand. The literacy program can help adults in the community with: - Improving their reading skills - Learning new skills (3D printing, technology) - Earning high school diplomas There will be games, refreshments, raffle prizes, and more! It all takes place from 5-6:30PM that evening. The library is located at 4978 10th Street.

The library now has a walking club! Have you been wanting to get in shape or meet new friends? Starting on February 25, the library will have staff members lead a walking club each Tuesday at noon. The goal is to get outside for 20 to 30 minutes and walk around the courthouse area and back toward the County Government Center. We will meet in the library, highlight some new books, and then depart. Water filling stations are available at the library, so bring a bottle! Participants will need to sign a waiver.
We have added an event to our April offerings. We will be broadcasting a CalMatters presentation about Renters Rights and Eviction Protections in California. This virtual event will be held Tuesday, April 29 from 11-11:30 at the Mariposa Library. This is free to attend. You are also welcome to register yourself and watch from wherever you decide, by using the QR code on this flyer. California is an expensive place to call home. But how did things get so bad? And is there anything we can do to make California affordable again? Need help navigating online resources to collect Social Security, VA benefits, and IRS tax returns? The Mariposa Library is here to help. A workshop will examine using login.gov to access benefits. This will be led by Jon Wurl and is designed to help participants set up an account on login.gov, a website where you can verify your ID to collect VA benefits, Social Security, IRS tax returns, and other government services.
